Thursday night was the last episode of Larry Wilmore’s Nightly Show on Comedy Central.
Wilmore was visited by his former colleague Jon Stewart. “What did you do, piss off Peter Thiel?” Stewart started, referencing to the shutdown of Gawker.
“Do not confuse cancellation with failure,” he told Wilmore, continuing: “What you, my friend, were tasked to do, you have done , and done beautifully.”
The Show was struggling for ratings for some time now. Before Jon Stewart left the Daily Show there were over one million viewers, but in July ratings had dropped to 770.000 average viewers. For Comedy Central that was more than enough reason to shut the show down.
“We hold Larry in the highest esteem, personally and professionally. He brought a strong voice and point of view to the late-night landscape,” Kent Alterman, the network president, told Variety. “Unfortunately it hasn’t resonated with our audience.”
Jon Stewart knows all too well the position that Wilmore is in now, but he continues to believe in the bright future that is ahead of Larry.
“You started a conversation that was not on television when you began,” Stewart said. “You walk out of this room and that conversation doesn’t end.”
Thanks for all the love, laughs and support. I’ll see you again very soon. Goodnightly. https://t.co/DDF7zMs6ip
